Dunelm has issued a product recall for a range of novelty doorstops after identifying a potential risk of asbestos contamination within the sand filling used in the products. Customers are being urged to stop using the affected items immediately and follow the retailer's guidance for safe handling and return.

Businesses, schools, care providers and other organisations that may have purchased these products should review their premises and remove any affected items from use immediately to prevent potential exposure.

Products Affected

The recall affects between 27 and 35 novelty doorstop designs sold between January 2019 and February 2026. All affected products were manufactured in China and include a variety of popular designs, such as:

    • Albert Dog

    • Honeycomb ranges

Why the Recall Has Been Issued

Investigations identified that the sand used to fill some of the doorstops may contain asbestos. Although asbestos is banned in the UK, it remains a serious health hazard due to the risks associated with inhaling airborne fibres.

Asbestos-related diseases can take many years to develop and may include conditions such as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. While the risk is greatest when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed, damaged products may release fibres that could be inhaled if not handled correctly.

Children should be kept away from any affected products.

Guidance for Customers

Dunelm advises customers to stop using the recalled doorstops immediately and follow the appropriate safety instructions depending on the condition of the product.

If the Doorstop Is Undamaged

    • Place the doorstop inside a heavy-duty plastic bag.
    • Secure the bag with strong tape.
    • Clearly label the package.
    • Store it safely out of reach of children until it can be returned.

If the Doorstop Is Damaged and Sand Is Visible

    • Avoid creating dust.
    • Use damp cloths to carefully collect any spilled sand.
    • Wear gloves and a suitable face covering.
    • Place the doorstop, sand and cleaning materials into a heavy-duty plastic bag.
    • Double-bag the materials and seal securely.

Returning the Product

Customers can return affected doorstops to any Dunelm store for a full refund. Those unable to return products in person should follow the safe containment instructions and contact Dunelm or their local authority for further guidance on disposal.
