Is your organisation compliant?

There are several relevant laws and regulations related to workplace ergonomics. Every employer should make sure they are aware of them and have a dedicated point of contact or team responsible for upholding the standards required to reduce the risk of injury to staff.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 mandates employers to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of their staff. Additionally, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 necessitate employers to evaluate and mitigate the risks associated with work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Under the Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Regulations 1992 (amended in 2002), employers are obligated to assess and address the health and safety risks for employees who regularly utilize display screen equipment (DSE), such as computers, laptops, and tablets. Measures to mitigate risks include furnishing ergonomic workstations and providing training on proper posture and positioning.
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to assess the risks linked with manual handling tasks, such as lifting, pushing, and pulling heavy objects. Employers must implement measures to mitigate identified risks, such as providing mechanical aids or training employees on appropriate lifting techniques. The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 mandate employers to ensure that the workplace is configured to minimise the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. This entails offering ergonomic workstations and ensuring that lighting and temperature are conducive to the tasks being carried out.
